WAYS TO PRAISE (PART 4) - TOWDAH

  1. Worship Don't Worry (Psalm 42:1-4; Definition; Psalm 50:22-23; Habakkuk 3:1-2,8,17-19; Psalm 56:11-12; Psalm 141:1-2; Song; Psalm 20:7; Psalm 121:1-2,5)

All Scriptures from NLT unless otherwise indicated

Psalm 42:1-4

1 As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. 2 I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? 3 Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?” 4 My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks [תּוֹדָה towdah] amid the sound of a great celebration!

Towdah תּוֹדָה

A choir of worshippers. Thanksgiving for things not yet received. A sacrifice of praise.

 - Chris Tomlin & Darren Whitehead, Holy Roar, p.44 (cf. James Strong, Towdah תּוֹדָה Word #8426, A Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Greek New Testament and The Hebrew Bible, Volume 2, p.123)

Psalm 50:22-23

22 Repent, all of you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. 23 But giving thanks [תּוֹדָה towdah] is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.

Habakkuk 3:1-2,8,17-19

1 This prayer was sung by the prophet Habakkuk: 2 I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger, remember your mercy. 8 Was it in anger, Lord, that you struck the rivers and parted the sea? Were you displeased with them? No, you were sending your chariots of salvation! 17Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! 19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights. (For the choir director: This prayer is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.)

Psalm 56:11-12 (Scripture Reading)

11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me? 12 I will fulfill my vows to you, O God, and will offer a sacrifice of thanks [תּוֹדָה towdah] for your help.

Psalm 56:11-12 (NKJV)

11 In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 12 Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God; I will render praises [תּוֹדָה towdah] to You.

Psalm 141:1-2

1 O Lord, I am calling to you. Please hurry! Listen when I cry to you for help! 2 Accept my prayer as incense offered to you, and my upraised hands as an evening offering.

Psalm 141:1-2 (NKJV)

1 Lord, I cry out to You; Make haste to me! Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You. 2 Let my prayer be set before You as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Shout to the North

Men of faith rise up and sing
Of the great and glorious king
You are strong when you feel weak
In your brokenness complete

Shout to the north and the south
Sing to the east and the west
Jesus is Savior to all
Lord of heaven and earth

Rise up women of truth
Stand and sing to broken hearts
Who can know the healing power
Of our Awesome King of Love

Chorus

We've been through fire.

We've been through rain
We've been refined
By the power of His name
We've fallen deeper in love with you
You've burned the truth on our lips

Chorus

Rise up church with broken wings

Fill this place with songs again
Of our God who reigns on high
By his grace again we'll fly

Chorus

Psalm 20:7 (NIV)

7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Psalm 121:1-2,5

1 I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! 5 The Lord himself watches over you!
