DEEP SORROW

  1. In heaven (Luke 23:44-45)
  2. On earth (Luke 23:46-48; Psalm 31:1-5)
  3. Among friends (Luke 23:49; Luke 2:33-35; John 12:32)

Luke 23:44-45

44 By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 45 The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.

Luke 23:46-48

46 Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!”  And with those words he breathed his last. 47 When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent. ” 48 And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow.

Psalm 31:1-5 (Scripture Reading)

1 O Lord, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. 2 Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe. 3 You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. 4 Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone. 5 I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God.

Luke 23:49

49 But Jesus’ friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching.

Luke 2:33-35

33 Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. 35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”

John 12:32

32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.
