  1. Blood symbolized forgiveness of sin (Hebrews 9:16-22; Leviticus 17:11; Romans 3:25)
  2. Even forgiven saints sin - that's one reason the sanctuary in heaven needs cleansing (Hebrews 9:23-26; Leviticus 16:5-9, 11-16; Daniel 8:14)
  3. Before Jesus returns, our Mediator also judges the dead, rewards the saints, and makes up His kingdom (Hebrews 9:27; Revelation 11:18-19; Daniel 7:21-22; Revelation 22:12,17)

All Scripture from NLT

Hebrews 9:16-28

16Now when someone leaves a will (covenant), it is necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead. 17The will goes into effect only after the person's death. While the person who made it is still alive, the will cannot be put into effect. 18That is why even the first covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal.19For after Moses had read each of God's commandments to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, and sprinkled both the book of God's law and all the people, using hyssop branches and scarlet wool. 20Then he said, "This blood confirms the covenant God has made with you."21 And in the same way, he sprinkled blood on the Tabernacle and on everything used for worship. 22In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. 23That is why the Tabernacle and everything in it, which were copies of things in heaven, had to be purified by the blood of animals. But the real things in heaven had to be purified with far better sacrifices than the blood of animals. 24For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with human hands, which was only a copy of the true one in heaven. He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our behalf. 25And he did not enter heaven to offer himself again and again, like the high priest here on earth who enters the Most Holy Place year after year with the blood of an animal. 26If that had been necessary, Christ would have had to die again and again, ever since the world began. But now, once for all time, he has appeared at the end of the age* to remove sin by his own death as a sacrifice. 27And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, 28so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

Leviticus 17:11

11For the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the LORD. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.

Romans 3:25

25For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

Leviticus 16:5-9, 11-16

5Aaron must take from the community of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. 6"Aaron will present his own bull as a sin offering to purify himself and his family, making them right with the LORD7Then he must take the two male goats and present them to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle. 8He is to cast sacred lots to determine which goat will be reserved as an offering to the LORD and which will carry the sins of the people to the wilderness of Azazel. 9Aaron will then present as a sin offering the goat chosen by lot for the LORD. 11"Aaron will present his own bull as a sin offering to purify himself and his family, making them right with the LORD. After he has slaughtered the bull as a sin offering,12he will fill an incense burner with burning coals from the altar that stands before the LORD. Then he will take two handfuls of fragrant powdered incense and will carry the burner and the incense behind the inner curtain.13There in the LORD's presence he will put the incense on the burning coals so that a cloud of incense will rise over the Ark's cover—the place of atonement—that rests on the Ark of the Covenant. If he follows these instructions, he will not die.14Then he must take some of the blood of the bull, dip his finger in it, and sprinkle it on the east side of the atonement cover. He must sprinkle blood seven times with his finger in front of the atonement cover. 15"Then Aaron must slaughter the first goat as a sin offering for the people and carry its blood behind the inner curtain. There he will sprinkle the goat's blood over the atonement cover and in front of it, just as he did with the bull's blood. 16Through this process, he will purify the Most Holy Place, and he will do the same for the entire Tabernacle, because of the defiling sin and rebellion of the Israelites.

Daniel 8:14

14The other replied, "It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the Temple will be made right again."

Revelation 11:18-19

18The nations were filled with wrath, but now the time of your wrath has come. It is time to judge the dead and reward your servants the prophets, as well as your holy people, and all who fear your name, from the least to the greatest. It is time to destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth." 19Then, in heaven, the Temple of God was opened and the Ark of his covenant could be seen inside the Temple.

Daniel 7:21-22

21As I watched, this horn was waging war against God's holy people and was defeating them, 22until the Ancient One—the Most High—came and judged in favor of his holy people. Then the time arrived for the holy people to take over the kingdom.

Revelation 22:12,17

12"Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. 17Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.
