  1. Hearing God through His Word is exhilarating when accepted (Luke 4:14-22; Isaiah 61:1-2a) Nazareth Churches Pic
  2. Hearing God through His Word is polarizing when rejected (Luke 4:23-28; Psalm 79:6; Isaiah 61:2b; Hebrews 4:12; John 7:5; Luke 13:35) Nazareth Synagogue Pic
  3. Angels and the Holy Spirit help you handle both (Luke 4:29-30; Mark 1:12-13; 2 Kings6:17; Genesis 19:16; Luke 4:14; 1 Corinthians 2:10-12; Acts 1:14) Nazareth Village Pic

Luke 4:14-22

14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit's power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. 15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: 18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the LORD's favor has come." 20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. "The Scripture you've just heard has been fulfilled this very day!" 22 Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. "How can this be?" they asked. "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

Isaiah 61:1-2a

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD's favor has come...

Luke 4:23-28

23 Then he said, "You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: 'Physician, heal yourself'—meaning, 'Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.' 24 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. 25 'Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.' 28 When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.

Isaiah 61:2b

2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD's favor has come, and with it, the day of God's anger against their enemies [italics, mine].

Psalm 79:6

6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you—on kingdoms that do not call upon your name.

Hebrews 4:12

12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

John 7:35

5 For even his brothers didn't believe in him.

Luke 13:35

35 And now, look, your house is abandoned.

Luke 4:29-30

29 Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff, 30 but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.

Mark 1:12-13

12 The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness,13 where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.

2 Kings 6:17

17 Then Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!" The LORD opened the young man's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire."

Genesis 19:16

16 When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety outside the city, for the LORD was merciful.

Luke 4:14

14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit's power.

1 Corinthians 2:10-12

10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets. 11 No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit, and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own Spirit. 12 And we have received God's Spirit (not the world's spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

Acts 1:14

14 They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
